Hanged Woman

I am standing on a pedestal which is hidden beneath the length of my dress. My hair is pulled to the ceiling from weights fixed to its tip. The constant pull of this weight creates both a physical and psychological tension. When an assistant releases the weight by cutting it from the hair, the weight falls and the tension stops. Then, I sit and make my hair free. Piece by piece I tear out my hair and throw it to the floor. First slowly, then with increasing violence.

BIO / JULIE JAFFRENNOU

"My performances are specific reports on the intimate body. I take as a starting point images which evoke the passing of time and certain stereotypes which carry the violence made on the human body. For each performance, I choose materials such as transparent latex, meat and edible paper and exploit their possibilities for building myself a new body. I put myself in a situation where I push myself to my physical and psychological limits.  I work with the dynamics and context of each place I perform.  I want to build a direct relationship with the energy of the space. Each performance is specifically designed or adapted to one place. My performances function as living sculptures. The public can see the action on all the sides."
