BIO / GULAY ALPAY Gülay Alpay was born in Istanbul, Turkey. She now lives and works in Istanbul and New York. She finished a master’s degree at the Mimar Sinan Fine Art University. She took part in numerous International art shows, fairs, group and solo exhibitions all around the world. She is an expressionist artist who finds inspiration in whales, sea life, nature and her own life, recurrent themes in her art for the past 20 years. Expressionistic art invites viewers to come and take a closer look, to dare and discover its secrets, and Alpay takes a playful approach and combines images of whales and phrases, which the viewer must uncover to discover the "secret" of each of her paintings. Her medium is mostly silk, with which she creates three dimensional silk paintings rooms. Silk allows for freedom of movement, for rhythm and fluidity, which is the pulse of her work. It would not be the same on canvas. She loves using bright colors and pop-art images in her colourful, playful, visually stimulating and exciting works. |
